In Awe of a Great Love

The other night I was laying in bed talking with another JPC volunteer. We had just gotten back from a week of hosting a mission team, and she and I were exhausted but ended up talking for an hour or so. Our conversation lead to how great and mighty and in awe of our Father in Heaven we are. This seems to be the theme He has been placing in front of me the last couple of weeks, I am constantly awestruck by him simply being God.

I don’t remember how we even got started talking about it but things like this just seem to hit you. As if the Holy Spirit pours a vat of love over you and you can’t help but lay in shock and awe, feeling completely immersed in the goodness of God. And in that moment God reminds you of what he means to you and who he is for you. For my friend God is the Creator of every cell, vessel, muscle, bone, and organ…working together harmoniously each and every second. He is a God that provides for needs. It is a miracle when we have food to eat, it is a miracle we have roofs over our head and a place to sleep at night, and it is a miracle we wake up breathing every morning.

For me God is the Creator of color, working every day to paint us a sunset and sunrise. He places each star twinkling in the sky, and shooting stars to light up the sky. He brings rainy days to water the earth and sunshine to dry it, allowing for plants to grow and farmers to harvest. He puts songs in our voices and in all of nature. He gives us talents, experiences, acquaintances, and dreams and somehow it all fits into this grand design he has written for each and every soul that has ever walked this earth.  And that God loves me…HE LOVES ME! He wants a relationship with me, he made me and wants to know me. That is truly amazing.

Most importantly this God made a beautiful perfect world for humanity to reside.  In his love he gave us free will and we chose to turn from him. Being a just God there were consequences, yet he took those consequences on himself, making a way for us to return to him. This is love in its purest form and that makes me stand in awe.

Moments like these are special. They are moments when we not only get to see a bigger picture of who God is to us but a piece of who God is to a fellow sibling in Christ. Together you get to see a sliver of who God is…and he is so great that we can’t comprehend how infinitely and unconditionally He loves us.

But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets.

-1 Corinthians 2:10

This volunteer is young, just graduating from high school, smart, with her whole life ahead of her, one day hoping to be a doctor. Starting life off on fire for God. The passion for Christ in our volunteers encourages us to share the love of God with the youth of Honduras. It is our prayer to see young people decide, entirely, to follow Christ before they jump into the temptations this world has to offer.

The last blog I wrote came from a broken heart for this broken and sinful world, my heart is still broken and will always be on this earth, but I stand in awe of a God who makes all things new. He has taken my stone heart and given me a heart full of life and love for him; if He has done that for me, He can do that for this broken world, and he can do that for you.  I stand in awe of this wonderful hope! And I pray you come to know deeper this wonderful hope found only in Christ.

And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.
